of the Philosophy of Education Society

Adopted, April 1, 2001

The Resolutions Committee consisted of the following members: Eric Bredo (Chair),
David Blacker, Jeanne Connell, and Lynda Stone. Harvey Siegel, Don Arnstein, Sharon Bailin, and Barbara Stengel also assisted.

Whereas the members of the Philosophy of Education Society are deeply
saddened by the recent death of Jim McClellan, its stalwart member for
nearly a half century, be it resolved that the society expresses its deepest
sympathy and condolences to his wife Dorothy and his family.
Jim McClellan cut a remarkable figure, with his earnestness, humor and energy. The
audacity of his persona was matched only by the audacity of his ideas. He unflinchingly
combined rigorous logical argument and criticism, technical skill, and unwavering
commitment to the Red flag. Many people just didn't take Marxism seriously; it wasn't
"real" philosophy. Logic, philosophy of science, epistemology, philosophy of language:
they were the Real McCoy. But over time Jim helped us understand that intense interest
in the technical problems of contemporary analytic philosophy could be combined with an unwavering commitment to social and economic justice.

Jim was hard-nosed, rigorous, critical, and creative. He dazzled us with his intellectual
acuity, his remarkable ability to listen to others and offer constructive criticism, and
passionate commitment to social justice. The twinkle in his eye, his ready langua, his love for his comrades the world is a lesser place in their absence.

Whereas the members of the Philosophy of Education Society are deeply saddened by the recent death of Murray Elliot, a long-standing member of PES, be it resolved that the society express its deepest sympathy and
condolences to his wife Mary and his family.
Murray was a founding member of the Canadian Philosophy of Education society and a
significance force in philosophy of education in Canada. His abiding commitment to
teacher education and his great personal integrity were significant features of Murray's
work and life. He will be greatly missed.

Whereas the Philosophy of Education Society has enjoyed a conference that exhibited both interesting novelty and continuity in philosophical strength, be it resolves that the Society express its appreciation to Suzanne Rice and the other members of the Program Committee for their hard work and excellent judgment, which so artfully combined care and justice in the selection of papers.
Whereas the Philosophy of Education Society has enjoyed good food and fellowship, moral education at Jane Addams' Hull House, and the (free) spiritual enlivenment of its new members, be it resolve that the Society thanks the Arrangements and Hospitality Committee co-chairs, David Hansen and Steven Tozer as well as the other members of the committee for their exemplary work.
Whereas the Philosophy of Education Society recognizes that its continued existence and good order depend on the actual implementation of their ideas and on care in organization whatever Postmoderns may suggest to the contrary be it resolve that the Society recognizes and appreciates the assistance of Diane Beckett, Diana Dummett, and Tim Simpson of Educational Theory, who have provided means to our ends becoming truly our supportive "staff" as well.

Whereas the Congress Plaza Hotel has provided a comfortable, well-situated, and artistically entertaining environment, one that shows both the similarities and differences between the Italian Renaissance and the Chicago Renaissance at the turn of the Twentieth Century, and its staff have treated us with courtesy and helpfulness, be it resolve that the Society express its appreciation to both the management, and, in the spirit of Jim McClellan, most especially to the workers of the hotel, who have made our stay so pleasant.

Whereas the Philosophy of Education Society recognizes that its members cannot do their work without the publications of others and acknowledges the value of having new work brought to our attention, be it resolved that the book display coordinators, Susan McDonough and Michelle Pierczynski-Ward, receive the Society's sincere appreciation for their work.
Whereas the Philosophy of Education Society has enjoyed the able leadership of Nick Burbules as its President, active philosopher, Editor of its journal Educational Theory, and Coordinator of its Yearbook operations, making him a veritable Hydra than Cyclops, be it resolved that we thank him for his excellent service and express relief that in stepping down he will be losing only one of his heads.

Whereas Frank Margonis has served the duration of a two year term on the Executive Board with great distinction, making it possible for Utah to maintain a hegemonic stranglehold on the Society during that time, be it resolved that the Philosophy of Education Society expresses its sincere appreciation, releasing him for missionary service elsewhere.

Whereas good scholarship and dialogue are known to require strong
institutional support, be it resolved that the Philosophy of Education Society thanks the following institutions for their continued support and belief in the value of philosophy of education:
University of Illinois at Chicago
College of Education
Department of Curriculum and Instruction
Department of Educational Policy Studies

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
College of Education
Department of Educational Policy Studies
Northeastern University
University of Kansas
Millersville University
