Resolutions of the Philosophy of Education Society

Proposed, March 20, 2005

The Resolutions Committee is: Scott Fletcher, Cris Mayo, Michele Moses

RESOLVE: It gets out what America gets into (ok, so that’s Tide, but you get the picture)

Here’s to those who helped us in and out of this year’s conference:

(1) Whereas Program Chair Ken “Know” Howe and his diligent Program Committee labored mightily to make the conference as tempting and satisfying as San Francisco itself, the turnout at sessions, the high quality of papers, and the stimulating discussions that occurred throughout the conference demonstrate without doubt or justificatory prevarication that these joys have been more than equal to the fine food and mood enhancing beverages offered nearby, therefore be it resolved that we express our deepest gratitude for the efforts of Ken Howe and the conference Program Committee.

(2) Whereas Eamonn Callan, Michael Katz, Denis Phillips, and Valerie Phillips served ably and with dedication as this year’s Arrangements and Hospitality Committee, and whereas they brought us to the beautiful, temperate heart of San Francisco where accommodations have been convenient and lovely, and where receptions have been catered with tasty morsels the memory of which still linger on the palate, be it resolved the we offer our most gracious thanks for their superb coordination and their successful efforts to entice robust attendance to the 61 st annual meeting by dangling before us the many charms of San Francisco.

(3) Whereas Stanford University, Michigan State University, and the California Association for the Philosophy of Education (CAPE) have been generous in their support of the annual meeting, be it resolved that we extend our sincere gratitude to these institutions for their help in making the conference a resounding success.

(4) Whereas Executive Secretary Kathy Hytten’s many challenges begin with the inconceivable, extend to the unconquerable, and end with the intolerable, we resolve to recognize her utter triumph over all adversity and to praise her dedication, her attention to detail, her extreme competence, and her unbounded capacity to address our outlandish requests, missed payments, luddite tendencies, and miscellaneous (not to say bizarre) personal needs.

(5) Whereas President Bob Floden has led us courageously in the finest San Francisco tradition, stood up to corporate rock, did what he could to support the hospitality workers by canceling the presidential luncheon and thus coincidentally avoiding all possibility that Denis Philips would publicly roast him, and whereas Bob rallied us to the barricades in his presidential address, stopping just short of an immediate march on Washington (or maybe Tennessee), we resolve to offer buckets of thanks and gratitude for Bob’s thoughtful, generous, and deeply professional leadership of the society.

(6) Whereas the Society recognizes the problematic circumstances of holding our meeting in the midst of an ongoing labor action brought by hospitality workers in San Francisco, and whereas we stand for a just and equitable outcome for these workers, be it resolved that we extend our thanks and solidarity to the staff of the Crowne Plaza and to the heart of the ongoing project that their political action represents.

(7) Whereas the graduate students at the conference provide energy and innovative thinking that gives PES a strong and hopeful feeling of vitality, and whereas we heartily recommend they heed the president’s advice (no not THAT president – President FLODEN’S – hey, now there’s an idea) to seize the moment!, we resolve to recognize the long and worthy toil of graduate students to seek and answer the questions that drive their work, and we offer our appreciation for their dedication to this pursuit here and at home.

(8) Whereas “to google” has probably become the most important verb in the English language, and whereas looking at the PES website comes second only to searching for additional references to one’s own name and work on the web, and whereas Craig Cunningham is an eminently able, committed, and masterful web builder, be it resolved that we offer our thanks for his work to keep those waves and particles (depending on your paradigmatic affiliation) flowing to help us communicate with each other and to find good restaurants at the conference.

(9) Whereas Educational Theory and the Yearbook continue to put our very best foot forward in the always complex and changing world of academic publishing, and whereas these volumes consistently reflect the high quality of thought and commitment of scholars in the field, be it resolved that we offer our thanks to Nick Burbules and the editorial board, associate editors, and reviewers of these publications for the extraordinarily important work that they do.

(10) Whereas we would all be left standing without nametags, registrations, receipts, conference programs and the rest (probably in the wrong hotel, maybe even the wrong city) without the help of Diane Beckett, and whereas we similarly depend on Diane’s support, along with that of her colleagues Joyce Atkinson and Sarah McGough, to get into print the many and conflicting stories of the world written by members of the Society, be it resolved that we offer our thanks and gratitude for these efforts to organize the conference and to leave behind some good philosophy jokes for later generations.

(11) Whereas the book display is richly constituted by works that might inform and guide our research if we ever got around to reading the ones that actually disagree with our positions, and whereas these books and journals are not only full of good ideas but also arranged artfully and with careful attention to the aesthetics of display, we resolve to acknowledge and thank Eamonn Callan for his work on the conference Book Display.

(12) Whereas the work and progress of the Society depends on the good will, generosity, and hard work of its committees, including the chairs of these select groups of the good, wise, and sometimes but not dependably beautiful, be it resolved that we recognize and offer our sincere thanks for these enduring efforts and the invaluable service these people provide to the Society.
