Conference (including the Early Registration Form and the hotel
reservations number),
the results of the Election Committee election, a dues notice for those
who have not yet forwarded their 2000-2001 dues, a Fellows Nomination
Form, information about the Conference Book Exhibit, and a Second Call for
Papers for the Chicago Conference. Read further for information about
various conferences and other information of interest to members..

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Nick Burbules

I am pleased that preparations for the Chicago conference are well
underway. Professor Iris Young, University of Chicago, will be our
inaugural Kneller lecturer. We are delighted that Dr. Young has agreed to
participate in the conference, and the session will certainly be worthy of
the occasion. Her lecture will be followed by an open reception for all
members. Emily Robertson and Natasha Levinson will be the respondents for
her session. I trust that all are making plans to attend the Chicago
conference. If you plan to submit a paper to Suzanne Rice and the Program
Committee, keep the November 1st deadline in mind. We hope for a record
turnout in the city of John Dewey and Jane Addams!

ANNUAL CONFERENCE SET FOR MARCH 30 - APRIL 2, 2000 - David Hansen

The 2001 Annual Meeting will be held at the Congress Plaza Hotel &
Convention Center. (For information about the hotel, check out
www.congresshotel.com. Established in 1893, the hotel is located on
Chicago's famed Michigan Avenue, just south of the world renowned Art
Institute and close to numerous other cultural sites. Across the street
is Grant Park, with a short, scenic walk along Lake Michigan to the Field
Museum, the Shedd Aquarium, the Adler Planetarium, and Navy Pier with its
Children's Museum and other attractions. There are fine restaurants near
the hotel's downtown location, and many, many more a short cab ride away
(or, e.g., a pleasant walk away as you take Michigan Avenue north). The
hotel is also close to well-known shopping venues such as Marshall
Field's, as well as a host of others north across the Chicago river, where
Michigan Avenue takes on the name "the magnificent mile."

The Congress Plaza Hotel will offer PES members a special discount rate
for the conference. Single rooms are $125.00 per night, and double rooms
$145.00, with a $25.00 charge for each additional person (rooms are also
subject to the local 14.9% hotel tax). The conference rate will apply for
the three nights prior to the meeting and the three nights after, based
upon availability, for those members who want to extend their stay in
Chicago. Reservations can be made by calling (312) 427-3800, ext. 5025,
or (800) 635-1666. Please identify yourself with PES to receive the
conference rate.

The Hospitality Committee, co-chaired by David Hansen and Steve Tozer,
will have further information available later with respect to restaurants,
sight-seeing, and so forth. For example, Steve is organizing a visit for
interested members to Hull House, located at the heart of where Jane
Addams performed her remarkable educational work at the turn of the
century for immigrant families. Chicago truly bustles with cultural,
historical, and educational wonders, not to mention exceptional cuisine
and entertainment, so make a point of reserving your room early!

A Conference registration form is enclosed with this mailing.

NEWS ABOUT THE 2001 PROGRAM - Suzanne Rice

We are very pleased to announce that Iris Marion Young will be the
inaugural George Kneller Lecturer. Currently Professor of Political
Science at the University of Chicago, Dr. Young is affiliated with UC's
Gender Studies Center and the Human Rights program. Her research
interests are in contemporary political theory, feminist social theory,
and normative analysis of public policy. She has published four books,
most recently Inclusion and Democracy (Oxford University Press, 2000).
Larry Hickman, Director of the Center for Dewey Studies at
Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, will be our other featured
speaker. We look forward to having him share his own research work as
well as the work of the Center with us.
Steve Tozer will be arranging a visit to Hull House as a
complement to our deliberations at the hotel site.
I neglected to include Christine McCarthy in the list of Program
Committee members last time around. Thanks to Chris and all committee
members for your valuable service.
Paper submissions have begun to arrive but many more are
anticipated and welcomed. Don't forget the November 1st deadline! All
those presenting papers at the Conference are expected to be members in
good standing of the Society and, of course, to register for the
Conference.
Those among you who wish to serve as session chairs or respondents
may contact me by mail or email. Include a note indicating your
area(s) of expertise.
We are planning a 9:00 AM start for the conference on Friday,
March 30, 2001, so make your travel plans to arrive Thursday night and be
ready to join the action on Friday morning. As usual, the conference will
wind down at noon on Monday (April 2nd).

SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS

The deadline for conference submissions is fast approaching November 1,
2000. The full Call for Papers, a style sheet, and the Copyright
Permission form are all available on the PES
website: http://www.philosophyofeducation.org. Submissions should be sent to
Suzanne Rice, Program Chair.

Reminder: A submission packet must include six copies of the paper (4500
word maximum) or proposal; a separate sheet including name, address,
institutional affiliation (if any), telephone number, email address, title
and 125 word abstract), and a paper word count (including footnotes); and
a completed copy of the copyright form. The envelope and each manuscript
should be marked PES SUBMISSION.

Send submissions to:

Suzanne Rice
Department of Teaching and Learning
School of Education
University of Kansas
Joseph R. Pearson Hall
1122 West Campus Road
Lawrence, KS 66045
Inquiries should be directed to Dr. Rice at srice@ukans.edu.

CONFERENCE ROOMS FOR GRADUATE STUDENT MEMBERS

PES will subsidize rooms for graduate students again this year. Any
graduate student who is a current member of PES is eligible for a PES
sponsored room. To reserve a room, send a note with your name, sex, the
nights for which you want a room, a check (payable to PES) for ten dollars
for each night you expect to use the room, address, phone number, and
email address (if available). A student's room will be confirmed upon
receipt of the check. The $10/night fee is refundable only if we are able
to find another student to take the space.

Rooms are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, so get your checks
in early to assure a space. Rooms will be shared, four students to a
room. We will make up to four rooms available on Thursday, Friday,
Saturday, and Sunday nights, accommodating up to 16 graduate students each
night. If you have any questions about space availability, contact Ann
Whitmire at help@philosophyofeducation.org or call 717-872-3785.

BOOK DISPLAY AT PES IN CHICAGO

A coordinator for the Chicago book display has not yet been named. As
soon as we have that information, we will send out an email announcement
and will also note it on the website. If you have suggestions for books
that you would like to see displayed (your own or someone else's), please
send the relevant information (the publisher's address would also be nice,
just in case) to Ann at the PES office
(help@philosophyofeducation.org). We'll be sure to forward it when the
coordinator is determined.

SECOND CALL FOR 2000-2001 DUES

Included in this mailing is the 2000-2001 dues form/payment envelop if you
have not yet paid your dues for this academic year. If you do not receive
a dues form, you are current. You can double check that by examining your
mailing label. It will indicate the last year for which you have paid
dues. Those that read 00-01 are current.

Those paying dues should make checks payable to Philosophy of Education
Society and return it in the enclosed envelope. Dues may be paid by
credit card, a service which includes a $5.00 per transaction fee to
underwrite the Society's costs for the credit card system. Credit card
transactions may be processed by e-mail to help@philosophyofeducation.org,
but please keep in mind that this is not a secure transaction.

Members outside US, please note: Dues and registration amounts are US
dollars. If you are sending a check from a country other than the US,
please clearly indicate "US dollars" on your check or adjust the amount to
reflect the currency differential. Thanks for your assistance in this
matter.

RESULTS OF THE ELECTION COMMITTEE BALLOTING

The following nominees received the highest number of votes for membership
on the 2001 Election Committee:

Clive Beck, OISE, University of Toronto, Chair
Kal Alston, University of Illinois, UC
Deanne Bogdan, OISE, University of Toronto
Megan Boler, Virginia Tech University Eric Bredo, University of Virginia
Jana Noel, Cal State, Sacramento
Emily Robertson, Syracuse University

Thanks to all who stood for election.

The Committee will choose a slate for upcoming vacancies on the Executive
Board and COPA. They will also select the next President-Elect. The
Committee will accept suggestions for all positions from the membership at
large. Those suggestions should be emailed to Clive Beck,
cbeck@oise.utoronto.ca. Clive can also be reached at 416-923-6641 or
416-975-9472.

NOMINATIONS FOR FELLOW

Included in this mailing is a nomination form to be used in suggesting a
member for Fellow status in the Society. This is more important than it
may seem since only Fellows may, by constitutional provision, serve as
officers and Board members!

Nominations for Fellow are considered by the Membership Committee prior to
the Annual Conference and approved by the Executive Committee at the
Conference. If you would like to nominate someone, including yourself,
for Fellow status, please provide the information and endorsements
requested and mail to Barb Stengel on the address noted on the nomination
form.

[If you are currently a Fellow, please remember to check that box on your
dues form. In true PES style, we have never recorded the names of Fellows
in a centralized list. We are trying to rectify that oversight now and
your help is appreciated.]

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND INFORMATION OF INTEREST

The Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain has a new
website: http://www.philosophy-of-education.org. Conference information
(January 10th submission deadline) can be found there as can detailed
information about their IMPACT series of pamphlets. The latter --
addressed to policy-makers and practitioners -- may be of special interest
given the discussion at the Toronto membership meeting about the
philosopher of education's role in school improvement.

There is a newly formed Michael Oakeshott Association that may be
of interest to our membership. You can find them at
http://www.michael-oakeshott-association.org.

The Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia has announced
their next conference to be held in Perth, Western Australia in late
November, 2001. No details are yet available, but we'll pass on
information as we receive it.

The 6th International History, Philosophy and Science Teaching
Conference (with the History of Science Society) will be held in Denver,
CO, US, November 7-11, 2001. Call for papers and other information is
available at www1.umn.edu/ships/hpst/2001. Deadline for submissions is
June 1, 2001.

The Norwegian Society for Philosophical Practice announces the 6th
International Conference on Philosophy in Practice in Oslo, Norway, July
24-27, 2001. For more information, email oslo@on.to.

Ed Theory has spruced up its website in honor of the 50th
anniversary issue. The address has not changed
(www.ed.uiuc.edu/EPS/Educational-Theory) but the services and content
have, thanks to Gicheol Han. Diane Beckett reports that Ed Theory is
selling back issues; check out the website if you are interested in
obtaining these.

KEEPING TRACK OF EACH OTHER

A number of veteran PES members have changed positions/locations in the
past year and graduate student members were successful in claiming
academic positions for the first time. While it is impossible for us to
reprint all the comings and goings with contact information in this space,
we would like to assist members in keeping track of each other. If you
are changing positions and would like to notify colleague friends of this
fact, send an email with new affiliation to
help@philosophyofeducation.org. (Don't forget to include full contact
info so we can make the change in PES files). We will list changes
received and direct members to the website for contact information.

Here are two moves to take note of:
Jana Noel from Montana State to Cal State, Sacramento
Barb Thayer-Bacon from Bowling Green to University of Tennessee at
Knoxville
If others have moved since last academic year, let us know and we'll be
happy to pass on the news.

By the way, please remember to check off on the dues form giving us
permission to post your contact information on the PES website.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY - Barb Stengel

I have been blessed while serving as Executive Secretary with two
remarkable undergraduate students who have acted as administrative
assistants. Many of you have interacted with Lisa Gorman who is phasing
out her service as she prepares for student teaching and graduation. Ann
Whitmire -- equally competent -- succeeds Lisa and is happy to assist you
with routine questions about membership and membership services. You can
reach Ann at help@philosophyofeducation.org or contact me at
barbara.stengel@millersville.edu. We can both be reached at
(717) 872-3785.

I would also like to publicly acknowledge Dean Ben Berhow of the
Millersville University School of Education. Dean Berhow has saved
headaches (me) and money (you) by supporting my service as Executive
Secretary generously. I thank him and wish him well as he departs from
the Dean's office.

This Society works because you work for it. Margaret Brockett and Dwight
Boyd did an excellent job as hospitality chairs for the Toronto conference
and then Margaret topped it off by completing a detailed "handbook" for
those succeeding her. Thanks Margaret! Suzanne Rice has been working all
summer to be sure that the coming year's program is excellent just as
Lynda Stone puts finishing touches on the published yearbook based on last
year's program. And behind the scenes, the "elders" who brought us the
"Millennial Resolution" at the Toronto business meeting are putting their
time and money where their mouths are, exploring the most fruitful ways to
keep the dialogue going about our role as philosophers of education in
responding to the realities of schooling. Spearheaded by Jim McClellan
and Don Arnstine, these folks are determined not to let the moment
pass. You will, I am happy to say, be hearing more from them and from the
Executive Board on this topic in the months to come. We are all indebted
to the folks I mentioned and to the many others who do the work of the
Society in myriad ways.

We have set up operations here to ensure accurate and timely service to
members, but we do make mistakes and we can always do better. You can
assist us by keeping us informed of your whereabouts, by letting us know
ASAP of any discrepancies in your records or ours, by paying your dues in
a timely fashion, and by recruiting at least one new member to join the
Society! Don't forget that all the forms and information you need
(including a copy of this Update) are always available at the Society's
website: http://www.philosophyofeducation.org.
