PES UPDATE OCTOBER 2002 UPDATE OVERVIEW This mailing contains information about the 2003 PES Annual Conference (including the Early Registration Form and the hotel reservations number), the results of the Election Committee election, a Fellow nomination form, and a dues notice for those who have not yet forwarded their 2002-03 dues. You will also find a Second Call for Papers and a Copyright form for the Miami Conference. Read further for other announcements of interest to members. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT - Sophie Haroutunian-Gordon Greetings to you on a magnificent fall day! Hope you are enjoying the new academic year, and that the promise of cooler weather is inclining your thought toward Miami, come March 2003. By that time, we will all be ready for philosophical (and other) fun in the sun! I want to begin by updating you on the progress of our Legacy Fund, which is off to a great start. Thus far, contributions totaling $3,395 have been made to the Fund. An additional $2,500 has been pledged, and we are hoping to receive those pledged dollars very shortly. If 100 more people give $50, we will reach our $10,000 goal in short order. Please help! The interest from these contributions will be used to enable people to attend the PES annual meeting in 2003 and for years to come - people who might otherwise find the travel costs prohibitive. It is easy to make your contribution - in any amount - when you pay your dues, and it will feel great to do so! Now, let me say that we have picked the right hotel for our upcoming PES annual meeting in Miami, March 28-31, 2003: The Royal Palm Crowne Plaza Resort. You may have seen the article about it in the New York Times on Sunday, August 4th. The developer, R. Donahue Peebles, had his challenges, but he did not walk away from the project when it went $20 million dollars over budget. The result is a striking institution "whose staff reflects the diversity Mr. Peebles is striving for." Given our focus upon multicultural issues at the meeting, we seem to have picked a most appropriate setting. So, submit your papers and plan to journey to Miami in March. Of course, submissions may cover any philosophical topic relevant to education and draw upon all traditions and disciplines of philosophy, the arts, sciences, and literature. We also encourage alternative sessions and innovative topics and formats. The first-ever Past-Presidents Panel will fill us with its wisdom, and the noted anthropologist, Richard A. Shweder, will give the Kneller Lecture on a topic related to pluralism. We are also composing a panel of our own members to continue the discussion with Shweder. And there will be more - much more! So plan to be with us. A future "Update" will describe travel resources available through the Legacy Fund.In closing, let me thank those who are working so hard to prepare for our grand gathering in Miami and in so doing, helping to make our society the vital organization that it is. First, there is our Executive Secretary, Kathy Hytten, who is learning the ropes from her able predecessor, Barb Stengel. The learning curve is steep, but Kathy has given generously of her time and effort to master the details of her formidable job. Then, there is Kal Alston, this year's Program Chair. Kal has been busy readying her troops, knowing that November 1 is looming large! Harvey Siegel found us Mr. Peebles' establishment, and this is only the beginning of his many accomplishments as Hospitality Chair. Finally, we owe special thanks to Michael Katz, who, among other things, has helped with financial matters, including the establishment of the Legacy Fund. To you all, we are sincerely grateful. So, get the presses rolling and submit your magnum opus - or a 12-14 page version of it - to the program committee. We will make this the most exciting conference yet! MESSAGE FROM THE HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE - Harvey SiegelThe Hospitality Committee for PES 2003 would like to invite all PES members to attend the Annual Conference in Miami, on Miami Beach, March 28-31, 2003. Miami is an exciting, international city, and the conference will take place in the city's most exciting and multicultural area: South Beach. Famous for its beaches, restaurants, ethnic mix, nightlife, and enthusiasm for unconventional activities and lifestyles, SoBe is the perfect place to philosophize (and much else!) Plan on staying a few extra days to enjoy the beach, travel to the nearby Everglades and Keys, or explore this dynamic, one-of-a-kind city. The conference will be held in the recently opened Royal Palm Crowne Plaza Resort, 1545 Collins Avenue (at Ocean Drive) on South Beach. This remarkable structure, featuring the completely restored/rebuilt Royal Palm and Shorecrest Hotels (which date from the 1930s) and a brand new tower facing the ocean designed to capture and complement the art deco style of the earlier hotels, is an architectural gem. The hotel's luxurious but 'laid back' feel, and proximity to all that SoBe has to offer, will offer a striking contrast to previous PES meetings. Don't miss it! Room rates: $159 plus tax single or double, plus $10 resort fee (which covers all manner of beach and water equipment). For reservations, go on line (below) or call 1-800-2CROWNE. Make sure you mention PES to get the conference rate. For information on Miami and its beaches, visit http://www.miamiandbeaches.com For information on the hotel, visit http://www.crowneplaza.com NEWS ABOUT THE 2003 PROGRAM - Kal Alston The full Program Committee is in place and eagerly anticipating your proposals. The Program Committee encourages members to submit special topical and alternative sessions. Members are reminded that with the exception of the Presidential Address, the Kneller Lecture and other specially-designated invited talks, only those full papers reviewed and accepted by the Program Committee and invited responses to them will be printed in Philosophy of Education 2003. Those who will consider serving as session chairs or respondents should contact Kal by mail or email. Include a note indicating your area(s) of expertise. We are planning a 9:00 am start for the conference on Friday, March 28, 2003, so make your travel plans to arrive Thursday night and be ready to join the action on Friday morning. As usual, the conference will wind down at noon on Monday, March 31.
The November 1, 2002 deadline for conference submissions is fast approaching. The full Call for Papers, a style sheet, and the Copyright Permission form are all available on the PES website: www.philosophyofeducation.org in case you lose your copies. Submissions should be sent to Kal Alston, Program Chair.
ˇ Six copies of the paper (4500 word maximum) or proposal; ˇ A separate sheet including name, address, institutional affiliation (if any), telephone number, email address, title and 125 word abstract, and a paper word count (including footnotes); and, ˇ A completed copy of the copyright form. The envelope and each manuscript should be marked PES SUBMISSION. Send submissions to: Kal Alston 911 South Sixth Street Champaign, IL 61820 Inquiries should be addressed to k-alston@uiuc.edu. CONFERENCE ROOMS FOR GRADUATE STUDENT MEMBERS Rooms are reserved on a first‑come, first‑serve basis, so get your checks in early to assure a space. Rooms will be shared, four students to a room. We will make up to four rooms available on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, accommodating up to 16 graduate students each night. If you have any questions about space availability, contact Kathy Hytten at help@philosophyofeducation.org or call 618-536-4434. BOOK DISPLAY AT PES IN MIAMIJeffrey Milligan, from Florida State University, has kindly agreed to serve as the Book Coordinator for the Miami conference. If you have recently published work to call to his attention, or thoughts about materials for the book display, please email him at milligan@mail.coe.fsu.edu. SECOND CALL FOR 2002-2003 DUES Included in this mailing is the 2002-2003 dues form/payment envelope if you have not yet paid your dues for this academic year. If you do not receive a dues form, you are current. You can double check that by examining your mailing label. It will indicate the last year for which you have paid dues. Those that read 02-03 or later are current. There are three options for paying dues: ˇ By check made payable to the Philosophy of Education Society (with the enclosed form). ˇ By credit card number provided on the enclosed form, or ˇ Through a totally electronic transaction via the PES website and PayPal. Currently there is an additional $5 fee for credit card billing which is used to underwrite the Society's costs for the credit card system. However, there are two big advantages when you use PayPal. First, the transaction fees are slightly lower (they are based on the amount you send). Second, you avoid the hassle of having to send materials back through the mail. So, we encourage you to take advantage of this system. For more details please visit the website (www.philosophyofeducation.org). Members outside US, please note: Dues and registration amounts are US dollars. If you are sending a check or money order from a country other than the US, please make sure it is payable in "US dollars." Our broker cannot process checks that are not made out to US dollars. We have had particular difficulty with checks from our Canadian members, so please bear this in mind when you are sending in your payment. Thanks for your assistance in this matter. RESULTS OF THE ELECTION COMMITTEE BALLOTING The following nominees received the highest number of votes for membership on the 2003 Election Committee: Barb Stengel, Millersville University Wally Feinberg, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign Michael Katz, San Jose State University Deborah Kerdeman, University of Washington Susan Laird, University of Oklahoma Kathryn Morgan, University of Toronto Harvey Siegel, Miami University Barb Stengel was the top vote getter and President Sophie Haroutunian-Gordon followed tradition in naming Barb Committee Chair. Barb graciously agreed. Thanks to all who stood for election. The Committee will choose a slate for upcoming vacancies on the Executive Board and COPA. They will also select the next President-Elect and they will select a new Executive Secretary to serve up to three one-year terms. The Committee encourages suggestions for all positions from the membership at large. Those suggestions should be emailed to Barb Stengel at barbara.stengel@millersville.edu. NOMINATIONS FOR FELLOW We are including in this mailing a nomination form to be used in suggesting a member for Fellow status in the Society. By constitutional provision, nominations for Fellow are considered by the Membership Committee prior to the Annual Conference and approved by the Executive Committee at the Conference. Only Fellows may be considered for an official position within the Society. If you would like to nominate someone, including yourself, for Fellow status, please provide the information and endorsements requested and mail to Kathy Hytten on the address noted on the nomination form. Members should be aware that the Executive Board discussed Fellow status at the spring meeting, and is still in the process of rethinking this status in response to suggestions by some members that the concept of Fellow is anachronistic and perhaps undemocratic. Still, such a change would require constitutional revision and cannot happen quickly. If you have any thoughts on this matter, please forward them to Kathy Hytten at khytten@siu.edu. The following is excerpted from the NY Times obituary published on July 16th: "Philip Phenix was born on March 1, 1915, in Denver, Colorado. He served as Chaplain in the United States Army during World War II, lectured in Philosophy at Columbia in 1949, was Chaplain, Professor of Religion and Dean at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and later was Professor of Philosophy and Education at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York, until his retirement in 1982. Dr. Phenix has served as president of the Philosophy of Education Society, was elected to the National Academy of Education in 1983 and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and a life member of the National Education Association. An accomplished author, Philip Phenix wrote numerous articles and eight books, including Intelligible Religion, Education and the Common Good and Education and the Worship of God. His seminal work, Realms of Meaning, delineated a concise framework both of knowledge and of the process of knowing, and examined classes of disciplines for their particular conceptual dynamics. His love and understanding of knowledge, education and teaching influenced generations of teachers and education policy-makers, here and abroad." ˇ We received a letter from William (Bill) Fisher's daughter informing the society that he passed away on April 9, 2002, followed two weeks later by his wife. FROM THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY - Kathy Hytten I have settled in to my responsibilities as Executive Secretary largely due to the ongoing help of Barb Stengel. There is much to learn in this role, and I am starting to feel fairly competent about most of it. Please feel free to contact me (khytten@siu.edu) with any comments, questions and/or concerns about your membership, or PES in general. If I do not know the answer to your questions, I will certainly find out who does. To date, we have received 02-03 dues from 236 members, which is less than half of our typical paid membership (we had 565 members last year). In order for the society to pay our bills, and for you to continue to receive membership benefits like Educational Theory, it is important that you pay your dues in a timely fashion. If you are not up-to-date, there is a dues form included with this form. If you think this may be an error, or if any information in your file may have changed, please contact me and I will make sure your record is accurate. Don't forget that all the forms and information you need (including a copy of this Update) are always available at the Society's website: www.philosophyofeducation.org. There are also informational links there to regionally affiliated philosophy of education societies, which offer a good chance to interact with PES members in more intimate settings. As usual, if you have any information you would like to include in the next PES Update (February 2003), please forward that to me and I will make sure it is included. I am looking forward to the conference in Miami and hope to see you all there.
