Autumn has arrived, a time when a philosopher’s fancy turns to
thoughts of – the next annual PES meeting! Many of the program
highlights are in place and promise to be exciting. Committee chairs
and their committees are working
hard to put together contributions to the program. Now all that remains
are the contributions from the members (keep in mind the paper submission deadline of November 1).
I would like to take this opportunity to begin to thank some
of the individuals and groups of individual whose efforts have been so
instrumental to
our activities to date. Someone said to me, when I was informed of
the Presidential nomination, that the key to a successful term as President
is having a competent Executive Secretary. Competent does not begin
to describe Sasha Sidorkin who took over as Executive-Secretary (Director)
in March and mastered a very steep learning curve in about five minutes!
Sasha has kept me on the straight and narrow and the Society running
smoothly, all with his inimitable wit and good humor. I also want
to acknowledge the hard work, dedication and gentle patience of Daniel
Vokey, who, along with his committee, is gearing up for the challenge
of reviewing submissions. The various committee chairs also deserve
thanks for their contributions.
And a renewed plea – please keep in mind the Legacy
Fund.
I look forward to seeing you all in Puerto Vallarta for stimulating
philosophical exchange, enriching cultural experiences (and some sun,
sand and Margaritas thrown in for good measure!)
NEWS AND NOTES ABOUT THE 2006 PROGRAM – Daniel Vokey
As reported in the July Update, 2006 Program highlights will include
the Kneller Lecture by Seyla Benhabib, Eugene Meyer Professor of Political
Science and Philosophy at Yale University, and an invited lecture by
Teresa Yurén, professor-researcher at La Universidad Autonoma
del Estado de Morelos.
The second call for papers has been posted on the PES web site at http://cuip.net/pes/2006Call.htm in
both English and Spanish. The deadline for submissions is November
1,
so you still have plenty of time to send in a paper, in English or in
Spanish,
or
a proposal for
an alternative session. As you will recall, while “thinking beyond
borders” was proposed as a theme given the special location of
the meeting, submissions on any topic within the broad field of Philosophy
of Education will be welcomed by the Program Committee. Note that the
anticipated switch to on-line submission has been postponed and we will
be using the same process as previous years.
If you are interested in serving as a respondent or chair, do please
let me know by sending a message to daniel.vokey@ubc.ca indicating your
areas of interest and expertise.
The content and location of 2006 PES meeting is sure to be an unbeatable
combination. I look forward to seeing you all in Puerto Vallarta next
April.

This year's Jobs for Philosophers Committee includes Charles
Bingham, Haeryun Choi, Scott Fletcher (chair), Walter Okshevsky, Heather
Voke,
and Gayle Turner. The goal of the committee is provide advice and support
for those seeking employment in the field. We look forward to seeing
you at the annual meeting in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and we are eager

in feedback from graduate students and would welcome volunteers to

suggestions or questions.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MUSINGS AND PLEAS:
Sasha Sidorkin
Greetings from Ohio. I am still intimidated by my new job,
and afraid of screwing up something really big. Thanks to the firm leadership
of Sharon Bailin, and Kathy Hytten's advice, this has
not happened yet: PES is not broke, and the annual meeting will happen.
I've
updated most of our database;
please
drop
me a line
whenever
you are
moving,
or changing
e-mails. Even though most of you receive updates electronically, we
need your physical address to forward to Blackwell and to mail you the
Yearbook. Every update will include your current information for
verification, so we can keep the database clean.
One clarification on the timing of our dues. The PES financial year
starts on July 1 and ends on June 30. You are entitled to four issues
of Educational Theory each year. For example, if you pay your
05-06 dues, you will receive two last issues of 2005 (55/3 and 55/4),
and two first issues of 2006 (56/1 and 56/2). However, WHEN you
receive your journals depends entirely on when you pay your dues. If
you pay
later in the year, or at the conference, you will not get your journals
for
the
current
year till after you pay. The message is this:
to receive your journals on time, you need
to
pay your
dues
at the beginning of the membership year, that is, around July 1.
My campaign of intimidation against people who are not comfortable with
all electronic ways of communication yielded some results: only 52 members
expressed the preference to receive hard copies of updates, which will
bring down our mailing costs. However,
I would like to emphasize that it is not my intention to keep out of
the loop anyone without
regular or reliable e-mail
access, or those philosophically opposed to electronic communications.
Please do not hesitate to let me know if you prefer to receive a hard
copy.
Craig Cunningham was the original web builder, and he provided exceptional
support to me and all previous secretaries. However, I took over the
day-to-day maintenance of the site, simply to make it easier and
to eliminate an extra step in the information flow. Craig has agreed
to remain our web consultant and help with the technical side. Please
send me any feedback on the new
look and structure of the web and all requests for posting jobs. Specific
suggestions about information that needs or does not need to be on the
web are especially
appreciated. Job announcements are posted when someone sends those to
me.

its 4th. international conference in Vancouver, B.C. between 12th. and
