Several special events are being planned across the program so plan to come earlier on Friday and stay later into Monday. Room arrangements and session times will be somewhat different this year due to space limitations in Toronto. One distinguished speaker has agreed to join us. This is Douglas Kellner, who holds the Kneller Chair at UCLA in philosophy and education. We hope to have other distinguished guests as well. 2. Several people have contacted me about special symposia and the program committee welcomes all proposals (with stipulation of shared costs of special equipment). 3. Rooms are available during "breakfast time" Saturday and Sunday of the Conference . Any SIG, discussion or project group, or committee wishing to use them should request space now. 4. The program committee is making every effort this year to have a diverse and representative program of ways to do philosophy of education. Groups of committee members will review like proposals in order to obtain the 'best' readings. 5. The program committee is also attempting to place as many PES members on the program as possible. If you would like to chair a session or act as a respondent, please let me know (lstone@email.unc.edu). 6. Both Margaret Brockett and Elizabeth Becker have put a great deal of time into room arrangements and scheduling. Both deserve our thanks. The deadline for conference submissions is fast approaching November 1, 1999. The Call for Papers and the Copyright Permission form are both available on the PES website: http://www.ed.uiuc.edu/EPS/PES. Submissions should be sent to Lynda Stone, Program Chair. CONFERENCE ROOMS FOR GRADUATE STUDENT MEMBERS PES will subsidize rooms for graduate students again this year. Any graduate student who is a current member of PES is eligible for a PES sponsored room. To reserve a room, send a note with your name, sex, the nights for which you want a room, a check (payable to PES) for ten dollars for each night you expect to use the room, address, phone number, and email address (if available). A student's room will be confirmed upon receipt of the check. The $10/night fee is refundable only if we are able to find another student to take the space. Rooms are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis, so get your checks in early to assure a space. Rooms will be shared, four students to a room. We will make up to four rooms available on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, accommodating up to 16 graduate students each night. If you have any questions about space availability, contact Lisa Gorman at pesbss@marauder.millersv.edu or call 717-872-3785. BOOK DISPLAY AT PES IN TORONTO James Cunningham will be coordinating the Book Display at this year's PES Conference in Toronto. If you have suggestions for books that you would like to see displayed (your own or someone else's), please send the relevant information (the publisher's address would also be nice, just in case) to him at: ejcunningham@oise.utoronto.ca or (416) 923-6641, ext. 2510. NEWS FROM THE WOMEN'S CAUCUS/COSW - Megan Boler This year's COSW members include Megan Boler, chair; Betty Sichel, Cris Mayo, Maureen Ford, and Stacey Smith. The Women's Caucus annual lunch meeting at the 1998-99 meeting was attended by about 25 PES members. At the last meeting in New Orleans, women's caucus members expressed concern that so few papers by women members of PES got onto the program. Members suggested that any persons who would like editorial comments on their submissions for the 1999-2000 program should contact us before the deadline for comments on their papers. To contact us, please contact Megan Boler at mboler@vt.edu. You may also request to be put on our PES women's caucus listserv by contacting Megan Boler at the above email. Last year's forum organized by COSW addressed "Gender Harassment in the Profession." It was a provocative session with papers by Suzanne Rice, Barbara Houston, Estelle Jorgensen, and comments read (in proxy) by Kal Alston. The proposed topic for address by the COSW at the 1999-2000 Toronto meeting is "Backdrop of Backlash: Challenges to Feminist Education at the Millenium." Anyone with ideas or suggestions for this year's forum, please feel free to join the listserv or contact: Dr. Megan Boler Social Foundations of Education Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Blacksburg VA 24061 NOMINATIONS FOR FELLOW Included in this mailing is a nomination form to be used in suggesting a member for Fellow status in the Society. These nominations are considered by the Membership Committee prior to the Annual Conference and approved by the Executive Committee at the Conference. If you would like to nominate someone, including yourself, for Fellow status, please provide the information and endorsements requested and mail to Barb Stengel on the address noted on the nomination form. THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION ON LINE The Executive Committee recently agreed to join the Philosophy of Education Work Group in Brazil (ANPED), and the Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia (PESA) in supporting the development of The Encyclopedia of Philosophy of Education On Line. Paulo Ghiradelli Jr. (a Brazilian teacher) and Michael Peters (a PES member) are Co-Editors of this effort and President Jim Garrison and President-Elect Nick Burbules are also involved. Paulo represents, as he describes himself, "a new generation of philosophers of education in Brazil, much more linked to American philosophy." You can check out his website at www.filosophia.pro.br. Michael Peters, as many of you know, is affiliated with the University of Auckland, New Zealand. The On Line Encyclopedia can be found at http://www.education.pro.br. (A link will be set up from the PES website to the On Line Encyclopedia in the near future.) A quick look will confirm that a number of PES members are participant authors. The editors are actively seeking additional entries at this time. Please consider making a contribution to this project. Contact Paulo Ghiradelli Jr. at paulo@sunline.com.br to express your interest. INPE 2000 Those interested in finding out about and attending the 2000 INPE Conference in Sydney can find complete information at the INPE website: http://www.icce.rug.nl/~inpe/ HARRY BROUDY RESOURCE AVAILABLE Member Michael J.B. Jackson contacted the PES office last year after hearing of Harry Broudy's passing, offering to share some resources in his possession if anyone is considering a retrospective on Professor Broudy's career. Michael has audiotapes and transcripts of three 75 minute lectures on Classical Realism delivered by Harry at Memorial University in Newfoundland in 1975. Professor Broudy served as the first Visiting Distinguished Professor in the Faculty of Education. If these materials may be useful to you or other colleagues, please contact Professor Jackson at: 205 Cote Ste. Catherine Apt. 1103 Outremont Quebec CANADA H2V 2A9 514-274-6615 IN MEMORIAM: MARTIN LEVIT >From Young Pai and from Nancy Levit comes news of the death of Martin Levit on August 31stof renal cancer. Marty was a long-time, active member of PES and served as President in 1966. Nancy Levit, Marty's daughter and a Professor of Law at University of Missouri -- Kansas City, was kind enough to enclose Marty's obituary and her own eulogy of him. She shared a sense of Marty's Chicago roots, some details of his semi-pro baseball career, his academic achievements at the University of Chicago, and his career highlights centered for almost forty years at the University of Missouri Kansas City. She described his "penetrating intellect," his "empathetic understanding," his "delicious non-conformity," his "deep integrity," and even "the touch of intellectual arrogance." She noted, "He lived by a set of well-thought out principles, including respect for others, appreciation of diversity, championing the underdog, and a commitment to nonviolence, equity, and justice." We are grateful to Nancy Levit for this reminder of her father's contribution to this Society and its work. FROM THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY - Barb Stengel I have settled in to my responsibilities as Executive Secretary largely due to the competent assistance of Lisa Gorman who is handling much of the day-to-day detail of the Society's business. Some of you have already interacted with Lisa via e-mail; she will be happy to assist you with routine questions about membership and membership services. You can reach Lisa at pesbss@marauder.millersv.edu or contact me at bstengel@marauder.millersv.edu. We can both be reached at (717) 872-3785. I have an apology to offer already. Megan Boler's name was misspelled on the ballot that went out with the July Update. I know better and apologize for that typo left uncorrected. We are continuing to streamline operations here to ensure accurate and timely service to members. You can assist us by keeping us informed about your whereabouts, by letting us know ASAP of any discrepancies in your records or ours, by paying your dues in a timely fashion, and by recruiting at least one new member to join the Society! Don't forget that all the forms and information you need (including a copy of this Update) are always available at the Society's website: http://www.ed.uiuc.edu/EPS/PES.
